Louis Hippolyte: Haitian General and President

Early Life and Military Career

Louis Hippolyte was born in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. His father, Jacques Sylvain Hippolyte, Duke of La Bande-du-Nord, had served as Minister of War under President Philippe Guerrier and as a member of the Council of Secretaries of State in 1845. After completing his education, Hippolyte embarked on a military career, attaining the rank of Captain in 1848. He eventually rose to the rank of General before retiring from service.

Political Career

Following his retirement from the military, Hippolyte entered the political arena. In 1879, he became Vice-President of the new Haitian Provisional Government after the overthrow of the previous administration led by Joseph Lamothe. In 1888, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture by President François Denis Légitime.

Election as President

After the National Constituent Assembly's constitutional amendments in Gonaïves on September 24, 1889, Louis Hippolyte was elected President of Haiti for a seven-year term.
