Ariel Henry: Haiti's Interim President
Ariel Henry, born in 1949, is a Haitian politician and neurosurgeon who serves as the interim President of Haiti since July 20, 2021. He is also the current Prime Minister, having been appointed by assassinated President Jovenel Moïse just days before his death.
Early Life and Career
Henry graduated from the University of Montpellier in France and worked as a neurosurgeon. He entered politics in 2015, serving as Minister of the Interior and then Minister of Social Affairs and Labor under Prime Minister Evans Paul.
Prime Ministership
In July 2021, Moïse named Henry as Prime Minister and submitted his nomination to parliament for approval. However, Moïse's assassination two days later disrupted the parliamentary process. Henry was sworn into office on July 20th.
Haitian Unrest
In autumn 2022, Haiti was engulfed in turmoil as protesters blockaded fuel terminals in protest against cuts in fuel subsidies. The crisis led to widespread fuel shortages, forcing hospitals and other institutions to close. Armed gangs also seized control of areas, besieging police stations.
International Intervention
In response to the escalating violence, Henry's government requested international assistance. The request was initially rejected, but in November 2022, the United Nations Security Council authorized the deployment of a multinational force to help restore stability in Haiti.
Allegations and Scandals
Henry has faced allegations of involvement in Moïse's assassination from the Chief Prosecutor of Port-au-Prince. He has denied the accusations and dismissed the prosecutor for alleged administrative irregularities.
In January 2022, Henry was reportedly wounded in a shootout between his security guards and an armed group in Gonaïves. Two others were injured, and one person was killed in the incident.
