Louis Patrick Gray III
Early Life and Military CareerLouis Patrick Gray III was an American politician and lawyer born on September 16, 1916, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1940 and served in the Navy during World War II.
Legal and Military Law Experience
After the war, Gray began his legal career, joining the Washington Bar Association in 1949. He earned a Juris Doctorate degree from George Washington University Law School and served in the Korean War. Following his military service, he held positions in the Connecticut State Bar Association, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals, the U.S. Court of Claims, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Return to Government Service
In 1960, Gray retired from the Navy with the rank of Captain. He briefly served as a military aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff before entering private practice in 1961. In the late 1960s, he returned to government service, holding various positions in the Nixon administration. He served as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Matters from 1970 to 1972.
Acting Director of the FBI
In 1972, Gray was appointed Deputy Attorney General, but his appointment was withdrawn by the President. Instead, Gray was appointed Acting Director of the FBI on May 3, 1972.
Watergate Controversy
Gray's tenure as Acting Director was marked by the Watergate scandal. In an attempt to cover up the investigation, Gray destroyed records related to one of the defendants, Howard Hunt. After the discovery of his actions, Gray was forced to resign on April 27, 1973.
