Biography of Louise Drew
Louise Drew was an American actress and the wife of actor John Drew. She was the mother of actors John Drew Jr. and Sidney Drew. Louise made her debut in the role of the Duke of York in William Shakespeare's "Richard III" at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia in 1827. She was a stage partner to actors E.T. Booth, E. Forrest, and others. Some of her notable roles included Romeo and Lady Macbeth.
Career with John Drew
From 1850 onwards, Louise Drew performed with her husband in comedies such as Lady Teazle and Lydia Languish in Sheridan's "The School for Scandal" and "The Rivals". In 1853, the couple took over the management of the Arch Street Theatre. Unfortunately, John Drew passed away in 1862.
Entrepreneurship and Teaching
From 1861 to 1892, Louise Drew led the theater as the first American female entrepreneur, combining her roles as a leading actress, director, and teacher. She taught actors such as F. Davenport, S. Robson, and A. James. In the years 1880 to 1892, Drew worked in the company of J. Jefferson. She also authored the book "Autobiographical Sketches" in 1899.
