Early Life and Stage Career
Lyubov Gollanchikova was born in 1889 and gained fame in her early years as a professional actress using the stage name Milly More. Like Raymonde de la Roche, her passion for aviation was ignited upon meeting Mikhail Efimov, a pioneering Russian aviator.
Aviation Initiation and Pilot's License
In 1910, Gollanchikova experienced her first airplane ride with Mikhail Efimov. Captivated by the experience, she enrolled in the Gamoun Flight School in 1911, becoming the third Russian woman to earn a pilot's license.
Soaring to New Heights: World Altitude Record
Gollanchikova's talent caught the attention of aviation entrepreneur Anthony Fokker, who invited her to Germany. In 1912, she set a world altitude record for women, reaching 2,200 meters. This achievement brought her international recognition.
Collaboration with Léon Letort
Following her record-breaking flight, Gollanchikova collaborated with French aviator Léon Letort. She served as his navigator during his return flight from Paris to Berlin, demonstrating her exceptional aerial skills.
Wartime Service and Return to Russia
Upon the outbreak of World War I, Gollanchikova returned to Russia and dedicated her efforts to the war effort. She donated her airplane to the Tsarist army and later conducted test flights for Farman-22 planes.
Post-Revolutionary Emigration and Later Life
After the Bolshevik Revolution, Gollanchikova initially embraced the new regime. However, she eventually emigrated to Germany and later to the United States. The reasons behind her decision remain unclear. In New York, she worked as a driver and passed away in 1961.
Legacy: A Trailblazing Pioneer
Lyubov Gollanchikova stood as a trailblazing aviator and a symbol of female empowerment in the early days of aviation. Her courage and determination paved the way for future women pilots and established her place in the annals of aviation history.
