Eduard Balmer: Maestro and Composer

Early Life and Education

Eduard Balmer was born into a creative family, the son of renowned artist Wilhelm Balmer. His musical journey began at the Basel School of Music (1920), where he laid the foundation for his future achievements.

Studies under Busoni

Balmer then joined the prestigious seminar of legendary composer and pianist Ferruccio Busoni at the Berlin University of the Arts (1921-1922). Alongside Kurt Weill and Vladimir Vogel, Balmer absorbed Busoni's transformative teachings, honing his compositional skills.

Early Conducting Career

After completing his studies, Balmer embarked on his conducting career in Lucerne (1928-1932). His talent as a conductor quickly garnered recognition, leading him to be appointed Music Director of the Bern Municipal Orchestra (1935-1964).

Collaborations and Achievements

As Music Director, Balmer played a pivotal role in premiering Frank Martin's Concerto for Seven Wind Instruments, Timpani, Percussion, and String Orchestra (October 25, 1949). His dedication to music extended beyond conducting, as he also headed the music department of Bern Radio from 1938 onwards, shaping the musical landscape of the region.
