Successful Removal of Giant Lymphangioma
Lucas McCauley, a young American, has successfully undergone surgery to remove a massive tumor from his face after a decade-long battle to raise funds for his medical expenses. The 22-year-old from Idaho finally got rid of the lymphangioma that appeared at birth through a surgical procedure in a New York hospital. According to his mother, Lucas is recovering rapidly after the procedure.
A Journey of Fundraising
Lucas had to raise over $112,000 to cover the cost of the surgery, without which the removal of the benign tumor from his face seemed impossible. To raise funds, he turned to the crowdfunding platform, GoFundMe. Despite his previous unfortunate experiences, Lucas doubted whether his tumor was operable or not until his story was featured on the television show 'The Doctors' last month. Live on the show, Lucas received good news: his tumor was treatable. Otolaryngologist Dr. Gregory Levitin stated that he was ready to perform the necessary surgery to restore Lucas' appearance to normal.
A Complex Condition
Plastic surgeon Dr. Jonathon Cabin explained the challenging condition Lucas faced. "We encounter similar cases from time to time," said Dr. Cabin. "But in this case, the tumor had spread everywhere. It was under his eye, reached his brain, and attached to his muscles."
The Long-awaited Surgery
After Dr. Levitin agreed to perform the operation, October 18 was chosen as the date. On his GoFundMe page, Lucas wrote about his lifelong battle against the tumor, having already undergone 24 surgeries. "For the first ten years, 24 procedures were performed," he wrote. "I am ready for the 25th operation, the one that will change everything."
A Successful Outcome
According to Lucas' mother, Sherry, her son's wish came true. She told KTVB that the surgery "went even better than he had expected." Lymphangiomas are congenital tumors that usually grow in the head and neck area. The growth of these tumors can lead to airway blockage and immense pain. Lymphangiomas can also affect the functioning of the spleen, tonsils, thymus, and adenoids, as they are all part of the lymphatic system. This system, an important component of the immune system, is responsible for removing excess fluid from the body's tissues.
The Challenges of Lymphangiomas
Lymphangiomas in the neck area can be identified even before birth, although this type of growth occurs in less than 50% of cases. Tumors can vary in size, but even the smallest one can rapidly grow.
