Biography of Lucélia Santos

Lucélia Santos is a Brazilian actress who gained the most recognition for her role as the protagonist in the television series "Slave Isaura" (1976-1977).

Early Life and Acting Career

Santos had her first acting role at the age of 14 in the theatrical play "Dom Chicote Mula Manca e seu fiel companheiro Zé Chupança" (Don Quixote Mule Mulca and his faithful companion Zé Chupança). Shortly after, her talent was noticed by theater teacher Eugenio Kusnet, who invited her to attend theater courses in São Paulo.

In 1976, Santos, who had no prior television acting experience, was invited to play the lead role in the television series "Slave Isaura". Following the phenomenal success of this telenovela, she received numerous invitations to star in other successful series such as "Stupid Cupid" (Estúpido Cupido), "Living Water" (Água Viva), "War of the Sexes" (Guerra dos sexos), and "Señorita" (Sinhá Moça). Additionally, Santos appeared in more than 20 films.

Playboy and Television Career

In 1980, Lucélia Santos posed for Brazilian Playboy. In the late 1980s, she terminated her contract with the television company "Globo" and moved to the competing channel "Rede Manchete", where she starred in telenovelas such as "Carmen" (Carmem), "Brazilian Women and Men" (Brasileiras e brasileiros), and "Dona Anja" (Dona Anja), among others.

Directorial Work and Recent Roles

Lucélia Santos also directed two documentary films - "Turning Point: China Today" (1996) and "East Timor: The Unseen Violence" (2000). Her most recent role on Brazilian TV was as Dona Fausta in the 2006 TV series "Citizen of Brazil" (Cidadão Brasileiro) produced by "Rede Record". She also participated in the Ukrainian travel program "Inside Out World: Brazil" (Season 10, Episode 5).

Personal Life

Lucélia Santos was previously married to Brazilian conductor John Neschling, and they have a son named Pedro Neschling. She practices Buddhism and became interested in the religion after visiting Tibet. Santos is friends with Krishna devotees and frequently visits the Krishna temple in Rio de Janeiro on Sundays, considering it her favorite place in the city.
