Saint Lucia Wang Cheng
Saint Lucia Wang Cheng was a Roman Catholic martyr born in 1882 in the village of Laochuntan, Hebei province.
Orphanage and Christian Persecution
Lucia was raised in an orphanage founded by a Catholic priest in Wangla village. In 1899-1900, the Boxer Rebellion erupted in China, targeting Christians with severe persecution.
Attack on Wangla Village
On July 24, 1900, Boxer rebels seized Wangla village, set fire to the Catholic church, and killed all the Catholics who failed to escape. Only the orphans, including Lucia, Maria Fan Kun, Maria Zheng Xu, and Maria Qi Yu, were spared.
Refusal to Abandon Faith
The rebels demanded that the girls renounce their Christian faith. However, they remained steadfast in their beliefs. For their unwavering faith, they were killed by the rebels on June 28, 1900.
Beatification and Canonization
Lucia Wang Cheng was beatified by Pope Pius XII on April 17, 1955. On October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Lucia and 120 other Chinese martyrs.
Legacy and Commemoration
Lucia Wang Cheng is remembered as a symbol of unwavering faith and courage. She is commemorated as a saint in the Catholic Church with a feast day on July 9th.
