Luciana Lamorgese: Italy's Minister of the Interior
Early Career in Civil ServiceLuciana Lamorgese began her career in public administration in 1979 within the Italian Ministry of Interior. In 1989, she was appointed vice-prefect and inspector, and in 1994, she became vice-prefect. In 2003, she achieved the rank of prefect, representing the central government in local areas.
Head of the Interior Minister's Office
On July 19, 2013, Lamorgese headed the office of Interior Minister Angelino Alfano. She was later appointed prefect of Milan on January 27, 2017.
Minister of the Interior
Lamorgese assumed the role of Minister of the Interior in Giuseppe Conte's second government on September 4, 2019. The new cabinet took office on September 5.
Response to COVID-19 Protests
In October 2020, riots erupted in Naples due to the impending implementation of new social distancing measures in response to the second wave of COVID-19 infections. Lamorgese condemned the violence as "organized, unacceptable, and condemnable," expressing support for law enforcement officers who faced an "urban guerrilla." Protests spread to other cities, including Rome and Turin, after restrictions on businesses took effect on October 27.

Lamorgese retained her position as Minister of the Interior in Mario Draghi's government, which was sworn in on February 13, 2021.
