Early Life and Career
Lucille Lortel was born Lucille Wadler on December 16, 1900, in New York City. She kept the exact year of her birth a closely guarded secret for most of her life. In 1930, she appeared in Arthur Hurley's short film 'Everything Happens to Me' with James B. Carson and Leo Hoyt.
Marriage and Theatrical Career
In 1931, Lortel married industrialist Louis Schweitzer. With the support of her wealthy husband, she embarked on a career as an off-Broadway theater producer and impresario.
The White Barn Theatre
In 1947, Lortel established The White Barn Theatre on the corner of Cranbury Road and Newtown Avenue, using her own property in Norwalk, Connecticut. The theater showcased unusual and experimental productions, fostering new playwrights, composers, actors, directors, and designers.
The Lucille Lortel Theatre and Legacy
The Lucille Lortel Theatre, located on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, New York City, is named in her honor. The 'Lucille Lortel Awards' recognize excellence in off-Broadway productions, and the Lucille Lortel Archive, also known as the Internet Off-Broadway Database, is maintained by the Lucille Lortel Foundation.
Death and Burial
Lucille Lortel passed away peacefully at the age of 98 in New York City. She was laid to rest at the Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
