Early Career and Transition to Defender
Ludovico Bidoglio began his football career at Club Sportivo Palermo as a forward. However, an injury to the team's defender forced him into that position during a match, and he never returned to the attacking line. After two seasons with Palermo, he moved to Eureka FC, where he played for four years.
Joining Boca Juniors
In 1922, Bidoglio joined Boca Juniors, where he spent the remaining 10 seasons of his career. Alongside Ramón Muttis, he formed a formidable defensive duo for the club. Bidoglio's elegant and graceful playing style, contrasting with the rough and physical approach common in South American football at the time, earned him widespread recognition.
Achievements with Boca Juniors
Bidoglio won five Argentine Primera División titles with Boca Juniors. His tenure at the club also marked a period of fierce rivalry between Argentina and Uruguay in Latin American football. Of the five South American Championships in which he participated, Argentina won two while Uruguay claimed three, finishing second to the Uruguayans in the other years.
International Career
Bidoglio made 34 appearances for the Argentina national team. He played in all of Argentina's matches at the 1928 Summer Olympics, where Uruguay defeated Argentina in the final. This tournament proved to be his final international competition.
Later Years and Final Season
At club level, Bidoglio continued to play for three more years. The 1931 season, the first professional season in the history of Argentine football, ended with Boca Juniors claiming the title, marking Bidoglio's final trophy. A collision with Alberto Sosaya during a match against Estudiantes de La Plata ended his career with a severe injury.
Post-Football Career and Legacy
After retiring from football, Bidoglio worked as an electrician. He passed away in 1970. Remembered as one of the greatest defenders in the early history of Latin American football, Bidoglio's elegant style and numerous trophies earned him a lasting legacy.
