Biography of Luigi Broglio
Luigi Broglio was an aerospace engineer, often referred to as the "Italian von Braun," and one of the founders of the San Marco program. This program enabled Italy to become one of the first countries to launch its own satellite. In honor of his contributions, an Italian space center and asteroid 18542 Broglio were named after him.
Early Life and Military Service
Luigi Broglio was born in Mestre, Italy, and his family moved to Rome in 1915. In 1934, he obtained his engineering degree and then served as an artillery officer in the military for three years. He later joined the Italian Air Force, where he was assigned as a lieutenant to the research center in Guidonia-Montecelio. Here, Broglio worked on various projects, including the design of jet engines, until he joined partisan forces in September 1943.
Post-War Career and Achievements
After the war, Broglio was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1950. In 1952, he became the dean of the School of Aerospace Engineering at La Sapienza University in Rome. As part of the school, he established the Center for Aerospace Research (Centro Ricerche Aerospaziali) and contributed to the construction of a supersonic wind tunnel and Europe's first satellite testing range. In 1956, he was appointed as the head of the Direzione Generali Armi e Munizioni project, focused on developing missile programs for military purposes.
In the following years, Broglio continued his work in the Italian Air Force and pursued scientific activities at La Sapienza University. In 1988, he became the director of the newly established Italian Space Agency (ISA). However, when the Kenyan space center was downgraded to a ground satellite control station in 1993, Broglio stepped down from the board of directors of ISA and resigned from his position.
Luigi Broglio's contributions to aerospace engineering and his role in advancing Italy's space program have left a lasting impact. His dedication and expertise have been recognized through the naming of the Italian space center and the asteroid after him, cementing his legacy in the field of aerospace technology.
