Early Life and Education

Born on 19 July 1845 in the town of Stari Bohorodchany in Eastern Galicia, Austria-Hungary (now Ukraine), he was the son of a teacher. He completed his secondary education at a real school in Lviv and went on to study at the Vienna Polytechnic Institute.

Engineering Career in Austria

After graduating in 1873, he worked as an engineer with the Austrian Western Railways, where he was involved in the construction of the Salzburg-Tyrol railway. He left Austria in 1878 and emigrated to Russia.

Academic Career in Russia

In Russia, he became a Russian citizen and converted from Greek Catholicism to Orthodoxy. He taught at the Zaraisk Real School and later at the Moscow Technical Institute, where he became a professor in 1885 after defending his doctoral dissertation on the analytical and graphical analysis of bridge beams.

Renowned Educator

From 1909, he held the title of Distinguished Professor at the Moscow Higher Technical School. He taught a wide range of subjects, including structural mechanics, water supply, sanitation, and hydraulic structures, and supervised students in architectural design.

Other Academic Appointments

In addition to his work at the Moscow Technical School, he also lectured on structural mechanics and graphical statics as a private docent at Moscow University from 1887. From 1892, he gave lectures on agricultural construction at the Konstantinovsky Surveying Institute.

Research Interests

His research focused on developing methods for calculating engineering structures, particularly statically indeterminate systems. His contributions in this area were significant.

Legacy

He passed away on 30 April 1916 and was buried in the Vagankovo cemetery in Moscow. His impact on the field of structural mechanics continues to be felt today.
