Early Life and Career
Luigi Delneri, a former Italian football player and manager, was born on 23 August 1950 in Aquileia, Udine. He made his professional football debut at the age of 16 with Spal, where he also worked as a warehouseman.
After playing for Foggia and Navarro, Delneri moved to Udinese and helped them earn promotion to Serie A. He later played for Sampdoria, Lanerossia Vicenza, Siena, Pro Gorizia, and Opitergina, where he ended his playing career.
Managerial Career
Early Managerial Roles (1986-1998)Upon retiring as a player, Delneri was appointed head coach of Opitergina. He later moved to Pro Gorizia and then Sicilian Serie D club Partinicaudace. He also managed Teramo, Ravenna, Novara, and Nocerina in Serie C2, winning the championship with the latter and earning promotion to Serie C1.
Ternana and Empoli (1998-2000)
Delneri's success with Nocerina earned him a contract with Serie B club Ternana. He guided them to consecutive promotions, moving them up two divisions to Serie A. However, after a brief stint as manager of Empoli in Serie A, he returned to Ternana.
Chievo Verona (2000-2004)
Delneri's greatest achievement came with Chievo Verona. He guided the unheralded club to promotion to Serie A and then to UEFA Cup qualification, finishing in the top half of the table in their debut season.
FC Porto and AS Roma (2004-2005)
Delneri's success attracted the attention of Portuguese giants FC Porto, but he was dismissed before making his debut. He then signed with AS Roma, replacing Rudi Voller, but left the club after a string of poor results.
Palermo and Return to Chievo Verona (2005-2007)
In 2005, Delneri joined US Palermo, guiding them to an impressive UEFA Cup qualification. However, the team's form declined, and he was dismissed in January 2006. He returned to Chievo Verona later that year, but could not prevent their relegation from Serie A.
Atalanta and Sampdoria (2007-2010)
Delneri moved to Atalanta in 2007 and led them to two successful seasons, finishing ninth and eleventh in the league. After leaving Atalanta, he took over at Sampdoria, improving their league position from 13th to fourth.
Juventus (2010-2011)
Delneri's biggest challenge came when he was appointed manager of Juventus in 2010. He aimed to build a team with a strong identity, but Juventus struggled under his leadership. After a series of poor results, Delneri was dismissed in 2011.
Later Managerial Career
After leaving Juventus, Delneri had brief spells with Serie A clubs Genoa and Udinese. He has since retired from management.
