Luigi Denza, born in Italy, embarked on his musical journey at the prestigious Neapolitan Conservatory. Under the tutelage of renowned composers Paolo Serrao and Saverio Mercadante, he honed his skills in composition. Subsequently, he took on the mantle of teaching vocals at the same institution.
Journey to London
In 1879, Denza relocated to London, where he became a formidable force in the musical landscape. From 1898 until the twilight of his life, he held the prestigious position of Professor of Singing at the Royal Academy of Music.
Musical Masterpieces
Denza's musical output was prolific, encompassing both instrumental compositions and a notable opera entitled "Wallenstein," based on the drama by Friedrich Schiller. Among his most celebrated works were his Neapolitan songs, including the timeless "Torna a Surriento" ("Return to Sorrento").
The Iconic "Funiculì, Funiculà"
Denza's creativity soared to new heights with the composition of "Funiculì, Funiculà" ("Funicular Railway") in 1880, coinciding with the opening of the first funicular ascent to Mount Vesuvius. Mistaking it for a folk song, the legendary Richard Strauss incorporated its melody into his symphonic fantasy, "Aus Italien."
Legal Triumph and Recognition
When Denza discovered the unauthorized appropriation of his work, he sought legal recourse. The court ruled in his favor, obliging Strauss to pay royalties for every public performance of the symphony utilizing the "Funiculì, Funiculà" melody.
Lasting Legacy
Denza's song continued to inspire generations, as evidenced by the 1907 orchestration by the celebrated Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, who titled it "Neapolitan Song."
