Saint Luigi Orione: A Life of Mission and Mercy
Early Life and EducationLuigi Orione was born in Pontecurone, Italy, in 1872, as the fourth child of Vittorio and Carolina Orione. Due to his family's financial constraints, he was unable to complete elementary school and instead helped his father with roadwork.
Vocation to Priesthood
At the age of 14, Orione joined Don Bosco's oratory, where he became actively involved in the religious association of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. In 1889, he entered the seminary and founded an informal group for peers unable to attend college. This group eventually formed the basis of the Congregation of Divine Providence.
Ordination and Founding of the Congregation
Orione was ordained a priest in 1895. As a pastor, he continued to guide his informal group, envisioning it as a new monastic congregation. In 1897, he drafted a constitution for the group, which attracted other priests.
With the bishop's approval, Orione and his fellow priests adopted a strict monastic lifestyle. On July 30, 1899, the first three members took vows, founding the Congregation of Divine Providence. In 1903, Bishop Bandi authorized the congregation's activities in his diocese, and in 1906, Pope Leo XIII approved its statutes.
Mission to the Poor and Marginalized
Orione's mission focused on serving the poor, orphans, and abandoned children. In 1906, he established the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity, a women's congregation devoted to this cause. He also founded vocational schools in Argentina and Brazil, and established a rural colony and orphanage in Palestine.
Expansion and New Foundations
Orione continued to expand his congregations, opening monasteries in Poland (1924) and founding the Blind Sisters of the Holy Sacrament (1927). In 1928, he began the construction of the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Grace in Tortona, which would be completed in 1959.
International Mission
Orione traveled extensively, visiting Latin America and meeting with Pope Pius XII. He died in 1940, and his relics rest in the crypt of the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Grace.
Legacy
Saint Luigi Orione's legacy lives on through the Congregation of Divine Providence and the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity, which continue to serve the poor and marginalized around the world. He is revered as a model of Christ-like love and compassion, and his teachings on the importance of prayer and sacrifice inspire countless people to this day.
