José Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha y Argüelles, a Spanish writer, dedicated much of his work to chronicling Russian history and society. His firsthand observations and extensive research in the country left a significant mark on European understanding of Russia at the time.
Mission to Russia
In 1788, Gutiérrez was commissioned by the Spanish King to spend four years in Russia with the sole purpose of learning the Russian language. He resided in St. Petersburg, immersing himself in the country's culture and politics.
Publication: "Compendio cronol?gico"
Upon his return to Madrid in 1796, Gutiérrez published his groundbreaking work, "Compendio cronol?gico de la historia y del estado actual del imperio ruso." This comprehensive compendium consisted of two main sections:
- Chronological Overview of Russian History:This section provided a detailed timeline of Russian history from its origins to the reign of Catherine the Great.
- Contemporary State of Russia:Here, Gutiérrez presented a vivid account of Russian society, economy, and political system based on his personal observations and research from Russian and German sources.
