Biography of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, commonly known as Lula, was born on October 27, 1945, in the small town of Garanhuns in a poor, large family. In 1952, his family moved to São Paulo.

Early Activism

After completing technical school, Lula worked as a mechanic in a steel factory. He began his involvement in public activism by joining the metalworkers' union. Lula quickly became a prominent figure, leading strikes and facing multiple arrests for his role in the labor movement.

Political Career

In May 1980, Lula founded the Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) and soon became its chairman. He also led the influential Unified Workers' Central (Central Única dos Trabalhadores) in Brazil. Lula was elected to parliament and served as a member of the Brazilian Congress.

Presidential Elections

In 2002, Lula achieved a record number of votes in the presidential elections, winning the presidency of the Federative Republic of Brazil. Despite facing increasing dissatisfaction from business circles due to his "leftist" policies, a survey conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion indicated that Lula had a good chance of being re-elected for a second term in the upcoming elections.

Lula is married to Marisa Letícia, and they have four children and two grandchildren.
