Early Life and Education
Lyudmyla Buimister was born in Moscow on November 5, 1985, to parents from Kyiv. Her father, Anatoliy Ivanovych Buimister, was a diplomat, while her mother, Kornelia Yevheniivna Luskalova, was from a prominent Ukrainian academic family. Lyudmyla's early upbringing was in Moscow, where she attended a prestigious secondary school.
Her academic journey took her to the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where she earned a degree in international public law. After MGIMO, she pursued a specialized diploma in corporate finance, business valuation, risk, and restructuring from the London Business School.
Business Career
Lyudmyla Buimister's professional life began in 2002 when she joined the oil company Yukos as an assistant to the chief legal counsel. Subsequently, she worked in various roles associated with Ukrainian businessman Serhiy Taruta. She served as an advisor to the chairman of the board of directors of the Industrial Union of Donbas (ISD) and later as the director and chair of the supervisory board of GSG Towers, a producer of towers for wind power plants within the Gdansk Shipyard Group.
In 2016, she became the CEO of the film distribution company KinoMania, owned by Taruta's daughters, Kateryna and Tetyana. Following the sale of GSG Towers in 2018, Buimister relocated to Ukraine. From April 2018, she engaged in consulting in the field of alternative energy and sustainable development.
Buimister played an active role in social responsibility, co-founding the Restoration and Development Agency of Donbas and the Save Our Kyiv charitable foundation. She also served on the supervisory board of the Danube Metallurgical Plant, part of the ISD corporation.
Political Career
Lyudmyla Buimister entered Ukrainian politics in 2019 when she was elected to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, as a representative of the Servant of the People party. She had previously been a non-partisan candidate but joined the Servant of the People party organization in Kyiv by mid-2020.
In the Verkhovna Rada, Buimister chaired the subcommittee on competition development and equal conditions for business. She also participated in the temporary investigative commission on investigating the causes of losses at coal industry enterprises. Additionally, she was a member of the permanent delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
Buimister's political career took a significant turn in July 2021 when she became one of the few Servant of the People MPs to vote against an "anti-oligarch" law initiated by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Subsequently, on October 19, 2021, she was expelled from the Servant of the People faction. In November 2021, Buimister joined the inter-factional group "Wise Politics," led by former Parliament Speaker Dmytro Razumkov.
Personal Life
Lyudmyla Buimister is married to Serhiy Zhuravel, an architect and her aide in parliament. She has two daughters, Anastasia Romano vna Buimister from her first marriage and Viktoriya Serhiivna Zhuravel-Buimister from her second marriage.
