Biography of Lyudmila Pavlichenko

Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko was a Soviet sniper who destroyed more than three hundred enemies. She was a Lieutenant and a Hero of the Soviet Union, and fought in the Chapayevsk Division. She participated in battles in Moldova, the defense of Odessa, and Sevastopol. By July 1942, Lyudmila Pavlichenko had already accounted for 309 killed German soldiers. Additionally, during the defensive battles, she was able to train numerous snipers.

Early Life and Education

Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko was born on July 12, 1916, in the settlement (now a city) of Belaya Tserkov. She attended School No. 3 until the age of 14, after which her family moved to Kiev. After completing the ninth grade, Lyudmila worked as a grinder at the Arsenal factory while simultaneously attending the tenth grade to obtain her secondary education. In 1937, she enrolled in the History Faculty of the Kiev State University named after T. G. Shevchenko. As a student, she participated in gliding and shooting sports.

World War II

The Great Patriotic War found Lyudmila in Odessa during her diploma practice. From the very first days of the war, she volunteered and went to the front. Lieutenant Pavlichenko fought in the Chapayevsk Division and participated in battles in Moldova, as well as the defense of Odessa and Sevastopol. By July 1942, she had already accounted for 309 killed German soldiers. Additionally, during the defensive battles, Lyudmila was able to train numerous snipers. In June 1942, she was wounded and subsequently withdrawn from the front. She was then sent with a delegation to Canada and the United States. During her trip, she was received by President Franklin Roosevelt. Later, Eleanor Roosevelt invited Lyudmila Pavlichenko to tour the country. She spoke before the International Student Assembly in Washington, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), and in New York. In America, she was gifted a Colt, and in Canada, a Winchester rifle.

Post-War Life

After returning, Major Pavlichenko served as an instructor at the Sniper School "Vystrel." On October 25, 1943, Lyudmila Pavlichenko was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. A postage stamp featuring her image was issued in the USSR. After the war, in 1945, she graduated from Kiev University. From 1945 to 1953, she worked as a researcher at the Main Staff of the Navy. Later, she worked for the Soviet Committee of War Veterans. A ship of the Ministry of Fisheries was named after Lyudmila Pavlichenko.

Awards

Lyudmila Pavlichenko received the Hero of the Soviet Union Medal, the "Golden Star" Medal No. 1218, two Orders of Lenin, and several other medals.
