Early Life and Education

Ivan Kirillovich Pankov was born on June 22, 1925, in Karpovka village, now part of Karlo-Liebknechtovsk in Ukraine. He completed eight grades in Artemovsk before evacuating to Kazakhstan with his family during World War II. There, he worked on a collective farm in Bat-Pak, Kazakhstan.

Military Service

In January 1943, Pankov was drafted into the Red Army. Initially assigned to airborne units, he joined the 300th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 99th Guards Rifle Division as a Guards Sergeant in June 1944 and was deployed to the Karelian Front.

Svir River Crossing

On June 21, 1944, as part of the Svirsk-Petrozavodsk Operation, Pankov participated in a diversionary demonstration to uncover enemy fire systems. Along with 15 other volunteers, he used dummies on rafts and boats to simulate crossing the Svir River.

During the crossing, Pankov's boat sank, forcing him to swim in full combat gear. He lost his boots and struggled against the strong current and explosions. Yet, he managed to reach the opposite bank with the help of a floating log.

Recognition and Award

Pankov's bravery was instrumental in exposing and suppressing enemy fire positions. This enabled subsequent assault groups to cross the river with minimal casualties. For his exemplary leadership and courage, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on July 21, 1944.

Post-War Career

After the war, Pankov completed officer training courses and served in the reserves with the rank of Lieutenant. He then held leadership positions in the Komsomol in Lviv, Ukraine, while studying at the Lviv Pedagogical Institute and the Higher Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU).

In 1951, he moved to Moscow and worked in the USSR Ministry of Geology until his retirement. Pankov was honored as an Honorary Citizen of Lodeynoye Pole in Leningrad Oblast.

Death and Legacy

Ivan Kirillovich Pankov passed away on May 14, 1992, at the age of 66. He was buried in Karlo-Liebknechtovsk. His heroism and sacrifice continue to inspire generations of Soviet and Russian citizens.
