Early Career

In 2005, Ma Qinghua began his professional racing career in the Asian Formula Renault Series as part of the Asian Racing Team. He achieved his best result of fifth place at one of the circuit races.

Formula 3000 and Formula Renault

In the same year, Qinghua competed in a single race of the Italian Formula 3000 series with the Belgian team Astromega. He returned to Astromega the following year for the Formula Renault Northern European Cup.

Superleague Formula and CTCC

In 2010, Qinghua represented a Chinese team in the Superleague Formula championship. In 2011, he achieved a significant victory by winning the China Touring Car Championship (CTCC) in the 1600cc class.

Formula 1 Breakthrough

In 2012, Qinghua became the first Chinese driver to participate in a Formula 1 race weekend. He replaced Narain Karthikeyan in a practice session at the Italian Grand Prix. Later that year, Qinghua had three more opportunities to drive in practice sessions. He was scheduled to become a regular HRT driver in 2013, making him China's first Formula 1 driver. However, HRT folded at the end of 2012, and Qinghua joined the Malaysian Caterham team as a test driver.
