Carlo Mario Abate: A Renaissance Man of Italian Motorsports

Early Career and Scuderia Serenissima

Maria Abate, better known by the masculine form of her name "Carlo Mario Abate," embarked on a diverse racing career. She predominantly drove for Count Giovanni Volpi's private Italian team, Scuderia Serenissima, but also competed for Scuderia Centro Sud, Scuderia Ferrari, and Porsche's factory squad.

Triumphs and Mille Miglia Victory

Abate's most notable triumph came in 1959 when she shared victory at the Mille Miglia endurance classic with G. Balzarini. She also claimed victory in a round of the 1962 World Sportscar Championship, the Trophée d'Auvergne.

Formula 1 Debut and Heartbreak

In 1962, Abate made a foray into Formula 1. She finished fourth in the non-championship Naples Grand Prix but crashed her Lotus in her next race, forcing her to withdraw from the championship races in France and Germany. She returned at the Mediterranean Grand Prix, finishing third.

Pivotal 1963 Season

The following year, Abate drove a Cooper for Scuderia Centro Sud to fifth place at the Imola Grand Prix and third at Syracuse. After another withdrawal from the Italian Grand Prix, she decided to retire from racing at the end of the season.

Targa Florio Triumph and Retirement

Abate's final campaign proved to be her most successful. She reached her zenith by winning the Targa Florio in a factory Porsche alongside Joakim Bonnier. Having achieved significant success, she subsequently transitioned to a role as a director in a private clinic.
