Early Life and ActivismMaciej Płażyński was born in Chojnice, Poland. His political journey began in the 1980s as a leader of the student solidarity movement. In 1987, he became president of the conservative Lech Bądkowski Club of Political Thought in Gdańsk. In 1989, he co-founded the Congress of Liberals association.
Political Career in Parliament
Płażyński entered parliament in 1991 after completing his legal studies at the University of Gdańsk. From 1990 to 1996, he served as Marshal of the Gdańsk Voivodeship, but resigned amidst protests from local unions. In 1997, he was elected to the Polish Sejm and became its Marshal, serving until 2001.
Founding the Civic Platform and Political Shifts
In 2001, Płażyński co-founded the Civic Platform party with Donald Tusk and Andrzej Olechowski. He served as a Sejm member from 2001 to 2005, but left the party in 2003 due to personal reasons.
Return to Politics and Rise in the Senate
From 2005 to 2007, Płażyński was a member and Vice-Marshal of the Polish Senate. In 2007, he rejoined the Sejm, this time as a member of the Law and Justice party.
Civic Activism and Tragic Death
In 2008, Płażyński became chairman of the Polish Community Association. He tragically died in the 2010 Smolensk plane crash, along with President Lech Kaczyński and other members of the Polish political elite. He was posthumously awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2010.
