Life and Early Career

Born into a political family in Senegal, Macky Sall's father served the ruling Socialist Party while his mother was a peanut vendor. Despite his father's affiliation, Sall joined the opposition Maoisist movement.

Sall pursued higher education in Senegal, graduating from the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar in 1988 as a mining engineer. He furthered his studies in France, completing his studies in hydrogeology and geophysics at the French Petroleum Institute in 1993.

Political Journey

In 1990, Sall joined the opposition Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) led by Abdoulaye Wade. He rose through the party ranks, becoming its regional leader in Fatick and joining its secretariat in 1998.

Sall's political career accelerated under Wade's presidency. He served as Minister of Energy and Mines (2001-2003), Minister of Interior and Local Communities (2003-2004), and Prime Minister (2004-2007). He was also President of the National Assembly from 2007 to 2008.

Conflict with Wade and Founding of the APR

A conflict with Wade led to Sall's removal as President of the National Assembly in 2008. In response, he founded his own party, the Alliance for the Republic (APR), and joined the opposition.

Presidency

In the 2012 presidential election, Sall emerged victorious despite losing in the first round. He gained the support of other opposition candidates and defeated Wade in the second round.

Upon assuming office, Sall implemented a governance and anti-corruption overhaul. He negotiated a ceasefire in the Casamance region in 2014 and implemented economic programs. Casamance received greater autonomy without being granted separatist status.

Sall's "Emerging Senegal Plan" (PSE) was launched in 2014, aiming to invest $21 billion in agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure by 2035. The target of doubling economic growth to 7% by 2017 was achieved.

International Leadership

In February 2022, Sall became the Chairperson of the African Union. In September 2015, he played a critical role in mediating the political crisis in Burkina Faso, leading to the reinstatement of the transitional government.

Legacy

Macky Sall has left a lasting mark on Senegalese politics. His presidency has been characterized by governance and economic reforms, as well as his contributions to regional stability.
