Medge Syers: The First Female Figure Skating Champion

Medge Syers, an English figure skater, was the first woman to compete in figure skating and the first female world champion, as well as an Olympic champion. In 1908, at the age of 27, Medge won the Olympic medal, making her the oldest female Olympic champion in figure skating. At the same Olympics, she also won a bronze medal in pairs skating with her husband and coach, Edgar Syers.

The Journey to Success

Edgar Syers, Medge's coach, introduced her to ice skating. They got married in 1899, and in 1902, Medge decided to test her skills at the World Championships. At that time, it was unheard of for women to compete in sports, as the rules of the International Skating Union (ISU) did not specify the gender of participants. Medge defied societal norms and competed against men, finishing second ahead of Martin Gordon from Germany and Horacio Torrome, an Argentine residing in England. Ulrich Salchow, the winner of the tournament and a famous figure skater, was so impressed by Medge's performance that he gifted her his gold medal.

However, after Medge's victory, the rules were changed, and women were prohibited from competing against men. The organizers of the World Championships stated that the long skirts worn by female skaters hindered the judges' ability to see their legs and evaluate the quality of their skating.

A New Trendsetter

Following the rule change, Medge started skating with skirts that reached mid-calf, setting a new fashion trend. In 1903, the first British Championships were held, open to both men and women. Medge and Edgar participated in this new tournament, with Medge emerging as the champion and Edgar finishing second. She won the British Championships again in 1904.

Becoming World Champion

In 1906, the ISU introduced the women's singles category at the World Championships. Medge became the first women's world champion in figure skating and defended her title in 1907. Pair figure skating was added to the program of the World Championships in 1908. The same year, figure skating made its debut at the Olympic Games. Medge Syers became the first female individual Olympic champion in figure skating. She also competed in pairs skating at the Olympics with her husband, Edgar Syers, and secured a third-place finish.

Legacy and Final Years

Shortly after the 1908 Olympics, Medge Syers retired from competitive figure skating due to health issues. Tragically, she passed away from the flu in 1917 at the age of 35, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as a pioneer and trailblazer for women in the sport.
