Samuel Contesti: An Italian Ice Skating Journey

Early Years and French Success

Samuel Contesti, an Italian figure skater with French roots, was born in France. Initially representing France, he secured a bronze medal at the 2005 French Championships. Despite a silver medal in 2006, he was not selected for the French Olympic team.

Switch to Italy

Disappointed, Contesti decided to switch his allegiance to Italy, his wife's homeland. However, due to the International Skating Union's two-year "quarantine" rule for citizenship changes, he was unable to compete internationally despite winning the Italian Championship in 2008.

Breakout Season and European Success

In the 2008-2009 season, Contesti marked his return with silver medals at the Karl Schäfer Memorial and the Golden Spin of Zagreb. With a second Italian title under his belt, he amazed the skating world at the European Championships. Defying expectations, he outskated seasoned veterans like Tomáš Verner and Kevin van der Perren, capturing the silver medal.

Fifth Place at World Championships

At the World Championships, Contesti delivered a strong performance, placing fifth. This result earned Italy two spots in the men's single skating competition at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
