Magda Vášáryová
Early Life and EducationMagda Vášáryová was born on August 26, 1948, in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. Her sister, Emilia Vášáryová, is a renowned actress. Magda studied sociology at the University of Bratislava from 1966 to 1971.
Acting Career
Vášáryová began her acting career in 1970. Her breakout role came in the 1980 film "Postřižiny" ("Cutting It Short") directed by Jiří Menzel. She played the iconic role of Maryška, a village girl with a strong will. In 1988, she was awarded the prestigious title of Merited Artist.
Political Career
Diplomatic RolesIn addition to her acting career, Vášáryová has held numerous diplomatic positions. She served as the Czechoslovakian Ambassador to Austria from 1990 to 1993. After Slovakia's independence, she was appointed Ambassador to Poland from 2000 to 2005.
Ministerial Post
In 2005, Vášáryová was appointed the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position she held until 2010.
Presidential Candidacy
In 1999, Vášáryová ran for the Slovak presidential election. She campaigned on a platform of respect for human rights, environmental protection, and European integration. Although she did not win the election, she received a respectable number of votes.
Other Achievements
Vášáryová is also a passionate advocate for human rights and social justice. She has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program and is a founding member of the Slovak Peace Foundation.
