Early Career
Mahir Shukurov, an Azerbaijani football defender, began his career with local clubs Ganjlarbirliyi, FK Karvan, Neftchi Baku, and Olimpik Baku. He also played for Khazar Lankaran before making a move to Turkish club Antalyaspor.
Anzhi Makhachkala and Controversy
After joining Anzhi Makhachkala, Shukurov played 20 matches but expressed dissatisfaction with the club's tactics. He openly accused Anzhi of match-fixing, declaring, "I don't watch Anzhi games anymore. Why should I? Anzhi buys wins now, and then they celebrate the victories. They can't win any other way."
Return to Azerbaijan and National Team
Shukurov returned to Azerbaijan and played for Inter Baku in 2009. He joined Gabala in 2011, becoming the eighth Azerbaijani club in his career.
He made his international debut for Azerbaijan in 2004 and played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. In 2011, he briefly retired from the national team before returning later that year.
Doping Incident
After a match against Turkey in 2011, Shukurov tested positive for doping.
