Early Life and Career Beginnings
Chmerkovskiy's passion for dance began at the tender age of four. His younger brother, Valentin, also a talented dancer, shares his enthusiasm. In 1994, the Chmerkovskiy family immigrated to the United States, facing financial and language barriers. Despite a childhood injury while sledding that broke his leg, Chmerkovskiy pursued his dreams of becoming a professional dancer and choreographer.
Dancing with the Stars and Reality Television
Chmerkovskiy rose to prominence through his appearances on the popular American television show "Dancing with the Stars." He also hosted the Ukrainian reality show "The Bachelor" and participated in the Ukrainian reality show "KUB" for three seasons from 2011 to 2012. As of 2021, he serves as a judge on "Dancing with the Stars."
Dance Studios and Dance Team USA
Beyond his television presence, Chmerkovskiy is the proud owner of four dance studios in the New York City area, including "Rising Stars Dance Academy" (RSDA). Additionally, he co-founded and leads "Dance Team USA," a non-profit educational and charitable organization dedicated to recruiting, supporting, and training aspiring dance athletes.
Personal Life
Since 2012, Chmerkovskiy has been in a relationship with Peta Murgatroyd. Together, they welcomed their son, Shai Aleksander Chmerkovskiy, on January 4, 2017. The couple tied the knot on July 8, 2017, and welcomed their second son on June 18, 2023.
Acting Career
Chmerkovskiy has showcased his acting abilities in various television appearances, including episodes of "Svetlana" (2010), "Exes" (2012), "General Hospital" (2013), "Fuller House" (2016), and "Why Women Kill" (2019), where he performed a captivating tango at the start of Season 1, Episode 3.
