Malvina Reynolds (born on August 23, 1900, in San Francisco) was an American singer, songwriter, and political activist. She is best known for her song "Little Boxes". Reynolds was born into a Jewish family of two immigrant socialists who were opposed to World War I. In 1934, Malvina Milder (her maiden name) married William Reynolds, a carpenter and communist leader, and they had a daughter named Nancy in 1935.

Education and Late Start in Songwriting

Malvina Reynolds studied English language at the University of California, Berkeley, and completed her dissertation in 1938 to earn a doctoral degree. Despite playing the violin in a dance group when she was around 20 years old, she began her career as a songwriter later in life. It wasn't until she was in her 40s that she met Earl Robinson, Pete Seeger, and other folk singers and singer-songwriters. Reynolds returned to the University of California, Berkeley to study music theory.

Notable Songs and Achievements

Reynolds composed several popular songs, including "Little Boxes" (a song about suburban life inspired by Daly City, California), "What Have They Done to the Rain" (about radioactive fallout), recorded by The Searchers, "It Isn't Nice" (a civil rights anthem), "Turn Around" (about the growth of children, later performed by Harry Belafonte), and "There's a Bottom Below" (about depression). Reynolds is also known for writing children's songs such as "Magic Penny" and "Morningtown Ride" (which reached the top of the British charts in December 1966 when recorded by The Seekers).

Legacy and Influence

A biographical film titled "Love It Like a Fool" was made several years before Reynolds' death in 1978. Her most famous song, "Little Boxes", regained popularity after being featured in the soundtrack of the popular TV series "Weeds". During one of her performances, Malvina Reynolds shared, "I was once introduced as a woman who has written so many songs, she must write one before breakfast every day. That wasn't true, but one morning I thought it would be nice to write a song before breakfast - and that's how 'Little Boxes' happened."
