Early Life and Education

Born into a working-class family, the renowned Azerbaijani literary scholar commenced his educational journey at the Oriental Faculty of the Azerbaijan State University in 1930. The following year, he enrolled in the postgraduate program of the Institute of Peoples of the Soviet East.

Academic Career and Positions

1932-1941:Held the position of Associate Professor and Head of the Department at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute.

1938-1939:Served as Head of the Department of Literature and Deputy Director of the Institute of Literature and Language named after Nizami within the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

1939-1950:Ascended to the position of Director of the Institute of Literature and Language named after Nizami within the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

1941:Became Associate Professor and Head of the Department at the Azerbaijan State University.

1955-1961:Appointed as Academician-Secretary of the Department of Social Sciences within the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

1957:Assumed the role of Director of the Institute of Language and Literature named after Nizami within the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

1957:Headed the Terminology Committee of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

1961:Elevated to the position of Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

1963-1967:Elected as Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan SSR.

Literary Contributions

The scholar's literary endeavors commenced in 1923. He authored numerous works and monographs on both Azerbaijani and Russian literature. Notable contributions include his role as an author and editor of "History of Azerbaijani Literature" and "History of Azerbaijani Soviet Literature." Additionally, he translated works by renowned authors such as Leo Tolstoy, Nikolai Gogol, Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky, Miguel de Cervantes, Henri Barbusse, and Rabindranath Tagore into Azerbaijani.
