Manfred Burgsmüller: A Bundesliga Legend

Early Career

Manfred Burgsmüller, a German footballer, began his professional career with Rot-Weiss Essen and Bayer 05 Uerdingen. As a forward and midfielder, he consistently scored an impressive 16 goals per season.

Move to Borussia Dortmund

In October 1976, Burgsmüller joined Borussia Dortmund, where he transitioned solely to a midfield role. Despite this, he continued his prolific goal-scoring, averaging 15 goals per season.

Bundesliga Success

In the 1980/81 season, Burgsmüller achieved his peak in the Bundesliga, scoring 27 goals. His tally was just two less than Bayern Munich's Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the eventual league champion.

Later Career

After a short stint with FC Nürnberg, Burgsmüller moved to Rot-Weiss Oberhausen in the second Bundesliga. His 29 goals that season earned him the league's top scorer award and helped his team avoid relegation.

Return to the First Division

In November 1985, at nearly 36 years old, Burgsmüller returned to the first division with Werder Bremen. As a veteran, he played 115 matches for the club, scoring 34 goals, and was part of the team that won the Bundesliga title in 1987/88.

Legacy

Throughout his Bundesliga career, Burgsmüller made 447 appearances and netted 213 goals. His impressive record established him as one of the most prolific scorers in German football history.
