Early Life and Military Service
Born in Turin, Italy, he developed a keen interest in politics from a young age. During World War I, he volunteered for military service, serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Alpine troops. For his bravery, he was awarded the Silver Medal.
Political Activism and Wartime Resistance
After the war, he joined the "Liberal Revolution" movement. During the fascist dictatorship, he worked as a lawyer in Turin. Following the collapse of fascism and the German occupation, he became a member of the National Liberation Committee in Rome.
Political Career in Post-War Italy
Upon Italy's liberation, he became Secretary-General of the Liberal Party. He served as Minister without Portfolio in the first and second Bonomi governments (1944-1945) and Deputy Prime Minister in the Parri government (1945). He later held the post of Minister of Defense in the De Gasperi government (1945-1946).
Diplomatic Missions
In 1947, he was appointed Ambassador to the Soviet Union (Moscow), where he served until 1951. From 1951 to 1955, he served as Ambassador to Great Britain (London). He then held the prestigious post of Ambassador to the United States (Washington) from 1955 to 1960. His final diplomatic posting was as Ambassador to France (Paris) from 1960 to 1964.
Secretary General of NATO and Later Career
From 1964 to 1971, he served as Secretary General of NATO. In 1972, he was elected Senator for the Liberal Party and became President of the Liberal Party Group in the Senate. From 1979 onward, he held the position of President of the Italian Atlantic Committee.
Honors and Legacy
He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (1955) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (USA, 1971). He remains a highly respected figure in Italian and international diplomacy.
