Early Life and Career

Pedro Manuel Torres, known as Mantoras, was born on March 18, 1982, in Huambo, Angola. He began his professional football career with Progresso do Sambizanga in Angola.

Move to Portugal and Rise to Stardom

Mantoras' skills quickly caught the attention of Portuguese clubs. He was signed by F.C. Alverca, where his goal against Sporting Club de Portugal proved a pivotal moment in his career. In 2001, he moved to Benfica after an impressive first season with Alverca.

Injuries and Setbacks

Mantoras' promising career was cut short by a severe knee injury in 2002, requiring four surgeries and nearly two and a half years of rehabilitation. Despite the setbacks, he made a triumphant return in the 2004-05 season, helping Benfica end an 11-year drought and scoring five goals in 15 matches.

Returning to Form

Mantoras' recovery from injury was notable, but he struggled to establish himself as a regular first-team player in subsequent seasons. He remained a fan favorite and expressed his desire to stay with Benfica, even if he was not earning a salary.

International Career and Retirement

Mantoras played for Angola's national team, becoming part of the first African Portuguese-speaking nation to compete in a World Cup in 2006. However, he announced his retirement from international competition after the tournament, citing a lack of opportunities.

Legacy and Charity

Mantoras' impact extended beyond the pitch. After joining Benfica, he established a home for homeless children in Luanda, donating a significant portion of his salary to the cause. He has always remembered his roots and remains dedicated to helping the underprivileged.
