Early Life and Football Beginnings
Manolo was born in San Carlos del Valle, Spain. He briefly played football for his local team but never pursued a professional career. At age five, he moved to Huesca, where he developed a love for the sport, becoming a Zaragoza fan.
"Manolo El del Bombo"
One fateful day, Manolo decided to bring a drum to a Zaragoza match. His enthusiasm and rhythmic beats caught the attention of fans, earning him the nickname "Manolo El del Bombo" ("Manolo the Drummer").
The Valencia Years
In 1982, Manolo relocated to Valencia, where he became a die-hard fan of the local team. For 25 years, he attended every home match, becoming an iconic figure. However, a dispute with the club's management led him to boycott Mestalla Stadium in 2006.
The Spanish National Team
Manolo has followed the Spanish national team for over 30 years, attending countless games. He has been to ten World Cups and aspired to witness 12. After the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he announced his decision to stop traveling abroad due to difficulties accessing stadiums.
Distinctive Appearance
Manolo is easily recognizable at matches: he wears the Spanish national team jersey with the number 12, a black beret, and a large drum adorned with the Spanish Football Federation crest and the words "El Bombo de España MANOLO" on one side. The other side bears the slogan "DEPORTE SI, VIOLENCIA NO" ("Sport, yes; Violence, no").
Personal Life and Legacy
Manolo's wife left him in 1987, unable to cope with his lifestyle. He has remained single ever since. He replaces his drum after every major tournament. He once even convinced an ambulance driver to transport him to a Zaragoza match while recovering from a knee surgery.
Manolo's predictions during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa garnered attention, as he correctly anticipated Spain's triumph and some of their future opponents. However, his predictions for the latter stages of the tournament proved inaccurate.
