Deodoro da Fonseca: A Military Leader and First President of Brazil

Early Life and Military Career

Deodoro da Fonseca was born on August 5, 1827, in Alagoas, Brazil. He entered the military school in Rio de Janeiro in 1843 and graduated in 1847. Fonseca quickly rose through the ranks, obtaining the rank of captain in 1856 and becoming the head of the military school that same year.

War and Promotion

During the Paraguayan War (1865-1870), Fonseca was wounded and received several promotions. By 1885, he had become a field marshal.

Conflict with the Government

While serving as vice-president of Rio Grande do Sul, Fonseca became involved in a conflict between the army and the government over the right of officers to participate in political discussions. He was eventually dismissed from the army.

Revolutionary Leader

Despite his dismissal, Fonseca maintained a strong reputation within the military. In 1889, he led a coup d'état that resulted in the overthrow of the government. On November 15, 1889, the rebels seized government buildings in Rio de Janeiro and proclaimed a republic. Emperor Pedro II abdicated and left Brazil a few days later.

Presidency

Fonseca was proclaimed the first president of Brazil on February 25, 1891. However, he faced conflicts with Congress and eventually dissolved it on November 3 of the same year. He then resigned on November 23.

Later Life and Legacy

Deodoro da Fonseca died in Rio de Janeiro on April 23, 1892. He is remembered as a military leader and the first president of Brazil, despite his short-lived presidency.
