Manuel V. Pangilinan: A Business and Sports Visionary
Early Life and EducationManuel V. Pangilinan was born in the Philippines on March 14, 1946. He graduated with honors from Ateneo de Manila University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. In 1968, he earned his Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Business Career
First Pacific and BeyondIn 1981, Pangilinan founded First Pacific, a diversified company involved in a wide range of industries. He served as its Managing Director until 1999. He was promoted to Executive Director in 2003 and later to Chairman of the Board.
Over the years, Pangilinan has held key positions in numerous other major companies, including Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, Maynilad Water Services, Inc., Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation, and Smart Communications, Inc.
Ateneo de Manila Controversy
In 2010, Pangilinan delivered a graduation speech at Ateneo de Manila University, where he was awarded an honorary degree. However, it was later discovered that portions of his speech had been plagiarized from speeches by Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, JK Rowling, and Conan O'Brien. Pangilinan subsequently confessed to plagiarism and apologized to the university president. He also requested to be relieved from all his positions at the university.
Sports Interests
In addition to his business endeavors, Pangilinan has expressed an interest in sports. He has expressed a desire to join an investor group seeking to acquire the NBA's Sacramento Kings franchise. Pangilinan has stated that he would only invest in the team if he could obtain a controlling stake.
