Early Life and Education
Manouchehr Mottaki was born in 1953 in Bandar Gaz, a town in northern Iran bordering Turkmenistan. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Bangalore University in India in 1976.
Political Career
Revolutionary Guards and ParliamentAfter the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Mottaki joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was elected to the first Majlis (parliament).
Foreign Ministry Leadership
In 1984, he served as the Director General of the International Affairs Bureau at the Iranian Foreign Ministry. The following year, he became Iran's Ambassador to Turkey. Mottaki held this post until 1989, when he was recalled amid allegations of his involvement in suppressing Iranian dissidents in Turkey.
Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador
From 1989 to 1992, Mottaki served as Deputy Foreign Minister for International Affairs. In 1992, he became Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal, Consular, and Parliamentary Affairs. He was appointed Iranian Ambassador to Japan in 1994.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Appointment by AhmadinejadOn August 14, 2005, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appointed Mottaki as Iran's Foreign Minister. Mottaki played a key role in maintaining Iran's nuclear program and opposing concessions to Western powers on the issue.
Nuclear Diplomacy
Under Ahmadinejad's administration, Iran restricted cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and resumed uranium enrichment. Mottaki strongly defended Iran's nuclear ambitions.
