Biography of Stanislav Gross

Stanislav Gross, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, was born in Prague. He completed his education at a transport technical school and worked as an assistant electromechanic in the locomotive depot of Prague-Vysočany until he was conscripted for military service in 1988. He served for two years in the garrison town of Olomouc.

In 1990, Gross was elected leader of the "Young Social Democrats" movement. His political career took a significant turn when the President of the Czech Republic, Václav Klaus, offered him the role of heading the cabinet of ministers. At the age of 34, he became the youngest prime minister in the history of the Czech Republic.

The previous head of government, Vladimir Spidla, resigned, taking responsibility for the failure of the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) in the European Parliament elections. Gross, as the leader of the ČSSD, the main force in the ruling coalition, assumed the role of prime minister.

In addition to his political career, Gross pursued further education, completing his studies at the law faculty of Charles University in Prague in 1999. He was elected as a member of the Czech Parliament and became the leader of the Social Democrats' faction. In April 2000, he was appointed as the Minister of the Interior and one year later became the First Deputy Prime Minister.

According to recent sociological surveys on trust in politicians among the Czech population, Gross occupies the second place, following President Václav Klaus. He is married and has two daughters.
