Marc-Andre Fleury was born on November 28, 1984, in Sorel, Quebec, Canada. With his French surname "Fleury," which translates to "flower" or "in bloom," the Canadian professional ice hockey player earned the nickname "Flower Power."

Early Career

Fleury began his hockey career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in the 2000-2001 season, playing for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. He quickly established himself as a talented player and earned recognition for his performance during the 2002-2003 season. Fleury won a silver medal with the Canadian team at the World Junior Championship and was named to the All-Star team of the QMJHL.

NHL Draft and Pittsburgh Penguins

In the 2003 NHL Draft, Fleury was selected in the first round by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Making his NHL debut in the 2003-2004 season, the 18-year-old Fleury became the youngest goaltender in the league. He played his first game on October 10, 2003, against the Los Angeles Kings, making an impressive 46 saves. Fleury secured his first NHL victory on October 18, with a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings, making 31 saves.

Fleury represented Canada twice at the World Junior Championship, winning silver medals in 2003 and 2004. He also won a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, although he did not play in any games.

Fleury continued to excel in the NHL, setting a record for most games played and minutes played in a single season. He signed a two-year contract extension with the Penguins in 2006. Fleury also spent the 2004-2005 season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League due to a labor dispute in the NHL.
