Marcantonio Cardinal Bartolucci
Early Life and EducationMarcantonio Bartolucci was born on April 9, 1944, in Bastia Umbra within the Diocese of Assisi. He studied philosophy and theology at the regional seminary, earning a doctorate in theology and a diploma in pastoral theology specializing in catechesis from the Pontifical Lateran University. Additionally, he obtained a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
Priesthood and Service to the Holy See
Bartolucci was ordained a priest on November 9, 1968. After ten years of pastoral experience as a parish vicar and parish priest, he joined the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints in 1977. He held various positions before becoming Secretary of the Congregation on December 29, 2010.
Ordinations and Apostolic Writings
Over two decades, Bartolucci composed decrees on virtues, martyrdoms, and miracles, both in Italian and Latin, for publication in the "Acta Apostolicae Sedis." He also drafted papal bulls of canonization and apostolic briefs of beatification in Italian. He served as Secretary of the Commission for the Revision of the Rite of Beatification and taught at the Congregation's "Studium."
Episcopal Ministry
On July 14, 2007, Bartolucci was appointed Undersecretary of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On December 29, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI named him Titular Archbishop of Mevania and Secretary of the Congregation. He was ordained a bishop on February 5, 2011.
