In 1998, Tochman joined the editorial staff of the Polish daily newspaper "Gazeta Wyborcza" as a journalist. He gained recognition as a war correspondent during the Kosovo War and the NATO intervention in Yugoslavia, as well as for his coverage of the ouster of Slobodan Milosevic.

As an Eastern Europe specialist, Tochman served as a correspondent for "Gazeta Wyborcza" in Kyiv and Moscow for many years. His written works often explored Polish-Ukrainian relations during World War II.
