Biography of Asghar Farhadi
Asghar Farhadi is an Iranian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born on May 7, 1972, in the small town of Khomeyni Shahr in Isfahan Province, Iran. Farhadi graduated from Tehran University's Tarbiat Modares in 1996.
Early Career
Before making his debut in feature films, Farhadi directed short films on 8mm and 16mm films, which he submitted to the "Iranian Society of Young Cinematographers." He also worked for the radio company "Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran" and co-wrote the screenplay for the drama "Low Heights" with Ibrahim Hatamikia.
Breakthrough
In 2003, Farhadi directed his first feature film, the drama "Dancing in the Dust," which received awards at several prestigious festivals, including the Moscow International Film Festival. His next film, "Beautiful City," was not very successful but still garnered several accolades.
Acclaimed Works
Farhadi gained widespread recognition with his later projects, the dramas "About Elly" and "A Separation." He won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival for the former and received positive reviews from critics. The latter became the most acclaimed film of Farhadi's career, winning the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as receiving a BAFTA nomination.
Recent Career
In 2011, Farhadi was selected as a jury member for the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival. In 2013, he directed his first foreign-language film, "The Past," which was well-received at the 66th Cannes Film Festival, earning two awards. His film "The Salesman" premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and received two prizes, including Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Shahab Hosseini. It also received an Oscar and a Golden Globe, making Farhadi the only living director with two Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
