Humble OriginsMárcio Micael Matolias, a 44-year-old Brazilian man, has been living in a sandcastle on Brazil's Copacabana Beach for over 20 years. Having grown up in the Guanabara Bay, Matolias has always been drawn to the beach, finding it a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The Sandcastle Palace
In an effort to avoid the exorbitant rent in Rio de Janeiro, Matolias built himself a castle out of sand, earning himself the affectionate nickname "King of the Beach." His three-meter-square abode may seem modest, but it offers him a breathtaking view of the ocean and the iconic Copacabana promenade.
The King's Daily Life
Matolias enjoys a leisurely lifestyle, spending his days reading, playing golf, and fishing. He delights in posing for photos with tourists and wielding his scepter in front of his castle throne. However, maintaining his sand palace requires constant attention, as he needs to regularly wet the sand to prevent it from crumbling.
A Philosopher by the Sea
Despite his regal title, Matolias has no desire for power or recognition. He finds solace in his simple existence, reflecting on life and the world around him. "I've come to believe that the only thing we can control is ourselves," he says. "Everything else is beyond our reach."
The Warmth of the Sand
While Matolias adores his beachside abode, he admits that the heat from the sand can sometimes become unbearable, forcing him to spend the occasional night at a friend's house. "The warmth keeps me awake," he explains. "But I always return to my castle by the sea."
A Life of Simplicity and Contentment
Matolias remains unmarried and childless, choosing instead to focus on his peaceful life on the beach. He has no regrets about his unorthodox lifestyle, saying, "I'm happy living here. It's all I need."
