Biography of Marco Arati
Marco Arati was an Italian opera singer, whose career spanned from the 1840s to the 1880s. Despite being considered one of the most outstanding opera artists of his time, very little is known about his life today, except for the fact that he participated in a significant number of premieres that would later become masterpieces of world opera.
Association with Teatro di San Carlo
Although Marco Arati occasionally performed in various Italian opera houses, he is primarily associated with the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. He sang on the stage of San Carlo for over forty years.
Birth and Early Career
The exact place and date of Marco Arati's birth are unknown, but it is believed that he was born between 1814 and 1819. His professional opera debut took place at the Teatro di San Carlo in 1841 when he participated in the production of Teodulo Mabellini's opera "Rolla".
Notable Performances
Among the countless premieres in which Arati participated at San Carlo, his roles as Andrea Cornaro in Gaetano Donizetti's "Caterina Cornaro" in 1844 and Callistene in Donizetti's "Poliuto" in 1848, Alvaro in Giuseppe Verdi's "Alzira" in 1845, and Wurm in Verdi's "Luisa Miller" in 1849 received special attention from the audience and critics. He also portrayed Old Orazio in Saverio Mercadante's "Orazi e Curiazi" in 1846 and Virginio in "Virginia" in 1866. In 1869, he performed the role of Filippo Augusto in Donizetti's opera "Gabriella di Vergy".
Final Appearance and Death
Arati's last known opera performance was his appearance as Indra in Jules Massenet's "Le roi de Lahore" at the Teatro di San Carlo. After this, there are no other records of his involvement in productions, leading researchers to suspect that the artist passed away shortly after the performance of "Le roi de Lahore".
