Marco Caneira: A Journeyman's Journey
Marco Caneira, a Portuguese footballer, began his career at Sporting Lisbon in 1995.
Early Career and Loans
In 1997, Caneira made his first-team debut for Sporting, but was soon loaned to Salgueiros and Beira-Mar. In the 1998/1999 season, he made 12 appearances for Beira-Mar.
Inter Milan and Loans
After a loan spell at Alverca in 1999/2000, Caneira was sold to Inter Milan. However, he never played a match for the Italian club, instead being loaned out to Reggina, Benfica, and Bordeaux.
Bordeaux Redemption
At Bordeaux, Caneira found his form, making 30 appearances in the 2002/2003 season. The club eventually purchased his rights from Inter Milan.
Valencia and Sporting Returns
In 2004, Caneira joined Valencia on loan. He scored two goals against Bordeaux in the Champions League and won the UEFA Super Cup as a squad member. Valencia purchased him permanently after the loan. After a brief return to Sporting in 2006, he returned to Valencia for another season.
Sporting and Portuguese Success
In June 2008, Caneira re-signed for Sporting. He played a key role in their defense, scoring a Champions League goal against Inter in 2006/2007. With Sporting, he won the Portuguese Cup in 2007.
International Career
Caneira's international career began with the Portugal U16 team, winning the European Championship in 1995. He also won the European Championship with the U18 team in 1997. In 2002, he made his senior debut in a friendly match. He was included in Portugal's squad for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, but did not play.
