Paulo Borges: Brazilian Football Legend
Early Career and BangúPaulo Borges, a renowned Brazilian footballer, rose to prominence as a right winger for Bangú. Making his debut on June 24, 1962, he became a prolific scorer, ranking sixth in the club's all-time scoring charts with 104 (or 107 according to other sources) goals. His first goal for Bangú came on August 18, 1963, against Olaria in a 6-1 victory. Over six years with the club, Borges amassed 207 appearances and 104 goals, twice claiming the championship title as the tournament's top scorer with 16 and 13 goals, respectively. His final match for Bangú was on February 11, 1968, against Atlético Mineiro, which ended in a 2-1 victory.
National Team and Transfer to Corinthians
During his time at Bangú, Borges was called up to the Brazilian national team by Vicente Feola. Despite being among the 47 candidates for the World Cup in England, he ultimately did not make the cut. He made 20 appearances for the national team.
In 1968, Borges was acquired by Corinthians in a record-breaking transfer worth one billion cruzeiros, the highest sum ever paid by a Brazilian club at the time. He made his debut for Corinthians on March 10, 1968, scoring the winning goal against Santos, breaking their ten-year unbeaten streak against his new team in the São Paulo State Championship.
Later Career and Family
Borges spent seven years at Corinthians, apart from a brief loan to Palmeiras in 1971. In total, he played 233 games and scored 61 goals, including 43 matches and 5 goals in the Brazilian Championship. Towards the end of 1974, he joined Nacional (Manaus), followed by stints at Pontalgrossense and Vasco da Gama.
Borges had two marriages and has several children from his first marriage. Currently, he resides in São Paulo.
