Biography of Sergey Baltacha
Sergey Baltacha, a football player and defender, was born in 1963 in Ukraine. He began his football career as a player for the youth team of "Azovstal" in Mariupol and later joined the sports boarding school in Kharkiv.
Club Career
Baltacha played for several clubs during his career. He started with "Metalist" Kharkiv in 1976 and then moved to "Dynamo" Kyiv, where he played from 1977 to 1988. In 1988, he transferred to "Ipswich" in England and played for them until 1990. He then joined "St. Johnstone" in Perth, Scotland from 1990 to 1993. After that, he played for "Caledonian" in Scotland and also worked as a player-coach from 1993 to 1995.
During his club career, Baltacha achieved significant success. He became the champion of the USSR in 1980, 1981, 1985, and 1986. He also won the USSR Cup in 1978, 1982, 1985, and 1987. In 1986, he was the winner of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
International Career
Baltacha represented the USSR national team in 45 matches, scoring 2 goals. He also played 2 matches for the Olympic team of the USSR and participated in 1 unofficial match for the national team, scoring 1 goal. His international achievements include being the runner-up of the European Championship in 1988 and winning the bronze medal at the Olympics in 1980. He also participated in the World Cup in 1982.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Baltacha pursued a career in coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the "CSKA-Borisfen" club in Kyiv, Ukraine from 1995 to 1998. He then moved to Scotland and worked as an assistant coach for "St. Mirren" from 1998 to 1999. He later became a coach for the Scottish Football Association from 1999 to 2001. Currently, he is the coach of the youth academy for the "Charlton" club in England, a position he has held since 2001.
